COVID19 Response Update: 6/11/2020
/In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Well Alliance has cancelled all events and convenings until further notice. During this time we are focusing our attention on allocating critical resources to our farm and garden partners and creating virtual experiences for metro Atlanta residents who want to remain engaged in the local food community. This blog will be updated with new resources and developments on Thursdays.
Home Gardens
In partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia, we ran the Georgia Plant 2 Plate program on June 4th at Aluma Farm and on June 7th and 9th at Atlanta Harvest. We were able to provide free gardening kits including pots, soil, trowels, gloves, and plant care guides to over 30 families. These families used EBT to purchase over 80 local fruit and vegetable plants at 50% off from our farmer partners.
The Bucket Brigade also partnered with Councilmember Thomas Calloway from the City of East Point to distribute another 150 container gardens to East Point residents on June 5th. The gardens contained tomato and pepper seedlings from Metro Atlanta Urban Farm and oregano from Urban Sprout Farms that will continue to grow across the city. Learn more here.
Community Gardens
We successfully held a test volunteer day at our donation garden, Tapestry. All volunteers wore masks and gloves. Due to the smaller group, it was easier to stay spread out. We accomplished a lot of weeding and mulching, which was much needed after so much rain in the last few weeks. We are running another test today, and hope to host small volunteer groups in the near future.
The Community Gardens team also partnered with Eco PARADIGM to help prep the Quest Veteran's Garden for planting, along with a lot of help from Gangsters to Growers. Eco PARADIGM also assisted with the removal of old garden beds at the Good Shepherd Community Garden in Lilburn, in preparation for their garden bed rebuild. Think Green, Inc, led by Khari Diop, also assisted with the tilling of the extension of the Firdous Garden at the Mohammad Schools of Atlanta.
