In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Food Well Alliance has cancelled all events and convenings until June 1, 2020. During this time we are focusing our attention on allocating critical resources to our farm and garden partners and creating virtual experiences for metro Atlanta residents who want to remain engaged in the local food community. This blog will be updated with new resources and developments on Thursdays.

Home Gardens

The Bucket Brigade will be back in action on Thursday morning at Metro Atlanta Urban Farm to distribute 150 additional buckets for 50 families in East Point. Councilmember Thomas Calloway and his team will be on hand to pick up and distribute the gardens.

We also developed new plant care guides for peppers, tomatoes, squash, okra, cucumbers, eggplant and sweet potatoes. Check out our new webpage with all of our plant guides, plus tips for growing in containers and dealing with common pests here.

We are excited to announce Georgia Plant 2 Plate, a partnership with Wholesome Wave Georgia to provide households on SNAP with 50% off local vegetable plants with EBT, plus free gardening kits to grow fresh food right at home. Aluma Farm is hosting a sale at their weekly farm stand on Thursday, June 4 in the West End, and Atlanta Harvest is hosting sales on Sunday, June 7 and Tuesday June 9 in Jonesboro. Get full details here.

Urban Farms

We have officially wrapped up our compost deliveries to farmers, distributing 340 cubic yards of compost to 16 farms. We also distributed 15 hand washing stations to nine farms around Atlanta.. Check out these photos from Soul Spirit Farm in East Point.

School Gardens

Project Giving Gardens - a partner effort with Captain Planet Foundation - is now bringing school gardens back to life at 64 schools across metro Atlanta! We are delivering plant starts, handwashing stations and irrigation systems, as well as providing garden maintenance while schools are out of session. Among the esteemed growers who will be installing and maintaining these gardens are Khari Diop, Edna Lora, Jamil, Don, and Jeanne Young.

Community Gardens

We have continued our support for community gardens with tilling, planting and some technical advising. We have also worked to finish planting our donation garden, Tapestry, and plan to pilot some small volunteer days there in the next two weeks. More volunteer workdays may become available in the future, if safety allows!
